Cheap Flights to Germany

Fairy tale castles, mythic forests, a rich history and plenty of contemporary cultural clout, Germany may lack the strength of the ancestral connections that Ireland and the UK have for Americans, but it remains a firm favourite nonetheless. From cosmopolitan Berlin, one of the coolest cities on the planet, to historic Hamburg and financial Frankfurt, Germany offers something for everyone.

When to Book Flights to Germany

Germany’s seasons have distinct characteristics, not unlike German regions. Winter is cold and wet, with temperatures, particularly in the east, plummeting below freezing. Things are much more bearable in spring (April and May): visit now for walks in rural Germany surrounded by fruit trees in bloom. Summer is warm, but don’t expect much more than 80oF at best. Fall is mild, but the not infrequent rains can take the a little of the delight out of the trees’ gloriously russet red foliage.

Peak season to visit is May to late October. Festivals and events cluster in cities over these months, the weather is at its best and, as a result, flight prices are at their highest.

In the ski resorts of the Bavarian Alps the peak season extends into the winter, and during the festive season, Christmas markets and fairs make demand for flights rise all over the country.

Apart from this time, cheapest flights to Germany can generally be found from November to April, with early spring, perhaps, offering the optimal combination of fair weather and cheap flights.

How to Find the Best Flight Deals to Germany

Orbitz can help you find the best deals on flights to Germany. Here’s how to use our search tools.

You can select to look at only direct or connecting flights, or a combination of both. Similarly, you can filter your results by refundable or non-refundable flights. Often a connecting flight may take a little longer but be considerably cheaper. Non-refundable flights are invariably the cheaper option.

You can use ‘Nearby airports’ to look for cheaper flights from an alternative US airport or to an alternative German airport. Such minor adjustments sometimes result in significant cost savings.

It’s also worth checking the tick box labelled ‘My dates are flexible’. This will return alternative, and often cheaper, airfares around your chosen departure and arrival dates.

Main Airports in Germany

Most larger cities in Germany have an airport – and the vast majority of them accept international flights. Frankfurt is by far the biggest and busiest, being an international hub for several major airlines with almost 50 million people flying in and out every year.

Munich is also very large, dealing with more than 40 million passengers. Dusseldorf, Berlin Tegel and Hamburg also offer major ports of entry.

Germany’s airports are all well connected to the nearest city by road, rail and bus services.

Which Airlines Fly to Germany?

Germany's major cities are well-connected to the United States. Flight time from New York to Berlin or Munich is between eight and nine hours, from Miami it’s ten hours and from LA it’s closer to 12 hours.

Airlines offering direct flights to Germany from America include:

  • American Airlines
  • Delta
  • United
  • British Airways
  • Emirates
  • KLM
  • Air Canada

How to Get Around in Germany

Germany has an excellent rail and bus network for getting around the country, as well as major and regional airports if you’d rather fly.

Another scenic option for travel is to book a cruise on the Rhine or Main River.

Within cities many areas are best explored on foot, such as the historic districts in Berlin and Frankfurt.

Germany gifted the world the autobahn, or motorway, and its modern road network makes hiring a car a very attractive option, although parking in cities like Berlin can be a bit of a headache.

Places to Visit in Germany

Berlin

Berlin wears the sheer weight of history it contains very lightly, managing to also present itself as a vibrant young city.

Munich

Things are rather more conservative among the half-timbered houses of Munich – except, of course, when the legendary Oktoberfest hits! Head out to the Bavarian countryside for classic German scenes of snow-capped mountains, vast tracts of pine forests and fairy tale castles.

Tips for Traveling in Germany

Travelers can obtain a Rail & Fly ticket at the same time that they book a flight to Germany. This provides connecting rail services to and from any German airport free of charge.
