First Glimpse The 66-stateroom River Baroness (132 passengers) is a sister ship to River Ambassador. Launched in 1997, it became the second vessel to join Uniworld. A top-to-bottom refurbishment in 2005 refreshed all of the public areas, and added new technology, hotel-style beds and DVD players. As with River Ambassador, the ship features all-outside staterooms, two passenger decks and a sun deck, open-seating dining, a small fitness center, beauty salon, library and lounge.
Cabins on the promenade level have windows that open. All cabins have shower, satellite televisions, DVD players (with movies available to borrow), direct-dial international telephone service and radios. While there are no accommodations that are designed for physically handicapped passengers, the ship does feature a deck-to-deck wheelchair lift since there is no elevator onboard.
Open-seating dining offers fine French cuisine using fresh regional ingredients, with wine available for purchase. Dress is resort casual with the exception of the Captain's Gala and other occasional "formal" events, which on this vessel means jacket and tie for men, cocktail attire for women.
All interior space on the ship is smoke free; smoking is allowed on the sun deck only.
There is an e-mail terminal from which outgoing e-mail can be sent (2.50 euros each); incoming e-mail goes to the reception desk and is printed out for the passengers.
Suggested gratuities total 13 euros per person, per day. River Baroness will become fully all-inclusive in 2014, when most Uniworld cruise fares will include unlimited wine, beer and spirits, as well as gratuities for onboard and onshore services, including pre- and post-cruise extensions.
