NCL Hawaii cruise
by Leslie T. from Kilauea, Hawaii
Sailing date:
Jul 2009
Pros:
Cruising around the Napali Coast
Cons:
Food, entertainment and cruising at night so you couldn't see the islands.
I would only recommend this cruise to someone who has either never been to Hawaii, or who has never cruised before. The food was nothing special and the restaurants that charge $25/ea extra weren't even special - cept for the sushi restaurant. They were the best restaurant on the ship. The tipping is automatic, so we felt that while they were ok, they didn't work as hard as they do when they have to earn their tips. We live in Hawaii, and we took the cruise hoping to see the islands from the sea. The Napali sail by was exceptional - very beautiful and I took about 300 plus photos. Met some wonderful new friends and have good memories of being with our son - he has fun, but was disappointed their wasn't more to do. Had hoped for skeet shooting. Again, good if you don't compare them to Royal Caribbean, showed them up big time in the food and entertainment..

Ship Quality
The Ahoha Cafe, which is the big buffet you can eat at, and the food was good, had been decorated as if the person who did it was on LSD. Nothing, and I mean nothing went together... almost made ya seasick....
Dining/Food
Open pretty much, so good to eat when you want within reason. Food quality was not great. Friend had a steak, one of the "good" steaks, that was like an old shoe. Disappointing.
Stateroom Quality
Lots of storage and that was great. Had a balcony so the the Napali coast cruise by was beautiful.
Ship Staff Quality
People were very nice.
Entertainment & Activities
Entertainment compared to other ships was pretty sad.... The improv people were funny, but you really have to like improv and some just don't get it - like my husband.

We just went in for a beer at the brewery. Didn't do any activities....
Don't Miss:
Guess the snorkeling tour was great.
Nawiliwili, Kauai
We live on Kauai, so didn't do the tourist stuff... went and checked on our animals. Make sure you tell people to take a helicopter ride and be sure to drive to the North Shore. Met many who didn't even know that the N. Shore is where the waterfalls are....
Kahului, Maui
Maui was ok. Sorry we couldn't see more of it from the sea... I used to live there, so know it but have never seen it cruising by.

Not so great
by Jen S from Rochester, MN
Sailing date:
Feb 2009
Pros:
being a shore, the excursions were great
Cons:
the overall ship experience was sub par, food was bad, had to pay for all soda and had to tip them for it
Hawaii is great but the over all ship experience was not. Room on the 4th floor was extremely loud with engine room noise, food was room temperature and flavorless, had to pay for all soda, but all the coffee you could drink for free. Very uncomfortable bed.

Terrible service, not friendly staff - d
by Michele from Hesperia, CA
Sailing date:
Aug 2007
We were very unhappy with our overall experience. We managed to create our own fun - the ship and its crew should be worked on to make it a much nicer experience.
Ship Details:
Dining/Food
Impossible to get reservations, not a good variety, what was on menu was not what was served.
Stateroom Quality
The state room was filthy. The bed was never once made up only the spread was placed over messed up sheets. Service to room - not any could never find the attendant.
Ship Staff Quality
very poor service at restaurants and room. Nice folks in lounges and helpful excursion staff.
Entertainment & Activities
Children's Programs
Pub crawl was fun.

Good. Kayaking is fun, waterfall was beautiful.
Kahului, Maui
Bad weather prevented the molokini excursion - bummer. We had fun with our rental car. Beach day was just okay.
Don't Miss:
Snorkeling molokini.

The poorest attitudes of employees.
by William from Hilo, HI, USA
Sailing date:
Jul 2007
Pros:
Design of ship.
My daughter and I found that the employees of the cruise line were very rude and at best, non-personable. Maybe they're overworked; maybe the attitude of their employer trickled down to them. At times, I found them only nice and helpful if a tip was expected or in your hand. I had waiters and staff that wouldn't even step aside in dining areas, passages, etc. They would absolutely come straight at you and let you bump into them without even the courteously of an apology. VERY RUDE BEHAVIOR for a hospitality business. There was times when my room wouldn't even be made up and other passengers that left tips on there bed would be made. I'm sorry that my first cruise with my 18 year old daughter's first cruise was so unpleasant because of the staff. We'll pick another cruise line before we go on another NCL.

Enjoyable. The lava flows were beautiful to watch.
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Kauii is beautiful. The shore excursion was disappointing.
Kahului, Maui
Maui was lovely when the sun shined. The first day we made our own plans and enjoyed the day. The second day was a shore excursion which we did not enjoy partly due to bad weather and partly to misinformation received about it.
Don't Miss:
Snorkeling at Molikini crater was great.

by Joe from Ft Worth, TX
Sailing date:
Feb 2007
Pros:
Very nice ship. Great itenerary!
The service staff was inconsistent and poor most of the time. This includes dinner, bars, buffet etc. Worst experience in 16 cruises. "If this would have been my first cruise, I would never cruise again."

Poor service.
by Kathy from Florida
Sailing date:
Apr 2006
Pros:
It went to all the islands.
Hated the open dining times. Had to wait one night 45 minutes to be seated. Service was slow in the dining room & no pampering because the staff changes every night, thus they do not get to know you and are unable to anticipate your needs and likes. Shore excurtions sold out quickly because most people booked prior to coming aboard. The staff was not knowledgeable about shore excurtions and we received bad advice.

Free Style dining consumes whole evening
by Trudy from Ohio
Sailing date:
Aug 2006
Pros:
Destinations.
Long lines to eat in main dining rooms each night. Would only take reservations for parties of 6 or more. Of course we only had 4 in ours. The only night we ate in the Liberty we waited for over an hour, and I had to get upset to get a table, and then we were hurried through our meal. I guess had I not experienced other cruises in the past I would have nothing to compare this to, but I have and this was a terrible experience. The all American staff was nice but not near as attentive as other cruises we have been on. Not many organized pool activites or adult game4s during the day.
