Queen Mary 2 Anniversary Cruise
by Sandy S. from Florissant, Co.
Sailing date:
Jul 2011
Pros:
Can't say there's anything I liked the most about the cruise. Meals were on par with average buffets...not what you'd expect from a great liner.
Cons:
Because tips are taken from you on your ship charges daily the staff seemed not to care as much because they got their tip anyway. They were not very cordial. The meals were substandard for a great liner. Having been on other cruise ships this one really let us down. The onboard shopping was bad.
I expected more out of a luxury liner like the Queen Mary 2, but other cruises we've been on were much more luxurious. The help wasn't very friendly...maybe because they automatically take the tip out each day for their staff....then they don't have to perform because they already have their money...no incentive to give good service. I also didn't like the fact that I had to pay 15% gratuity just to buy a bottle of water on the ship....that should have been included...or the fact that if you wanted soda you had to buy a "Soda Pack" at $4.95 a day plus 15% gratuity. Really! I paid good money for this cruise not to be tipped to death! There are some things that should be included like the water and soda! The shopping on board was very expensive and the wonderful sales tables they have on other cruises at great prices were mostly filled with stuff I wouldn't buy at a flea market! We were on our 40th anniversary cruise and this one certainly didn't deliver compared to domestic cruise ships. Not doing the QM2 again!
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
I have to admit the ship was large and was very clean.
Dining/Food
Chef Ramsey would be appaled at the quality of food served.
Stateroom Quality
Ship Staff Quality
Could have been friendlier. Always in the way and no "Excuse Me's". Sometimes bordering on rude.
Entertainment & Activities
Not as many options as other ships.

Loved Boston...would go back. We took the "duck" tour and our guide was definetly political in his speech on tour. Didn't care for that. Otherwise we had a good time in Boston. it was the 4th of July and was pretty crowded as was expected. Only way to see fireworks was from inside the ship in their theater as if we had stayed in town to view we would not have made it back to the ship before the ship left port.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
We weren't told when we booked this hop on and hop off tour that the town would be closed (Sunday) until 12:30 p.m. We had to be back on the ship at 4. We would have taken another tour to an outlying area had we known. Wasted money. Our tour was at 9:30 a.m.
Don't Miss:
Who knows...everything was closed!

Good trip... not the quality I expected
by Michelle M. from Texas
Sailing date:
Oct 2010
Pros:
The ship is beautiful
Cons:
The staff was not as attentive or knowledgeable as other lines. The onboard entertainment was lame. Limited food choices in the main restaurant.
The ship is grand and quite lovely. Unfortunately I find that other lines provide better onboard activities and entertainment. QM2 did not offer any "theme" nights and I found the menus in the main restaurant bland and lacking in choices. Our waiter was unfriendly and could be quite rude... Example: Each time we would be having a conversation with the couple at the next table, he would physically interupt us by making a scene of clearing the tables and arranging the settings for the morning service. We had the late sitting so it wasn't as though he needed the tables, he just wanted us gone. Several times when we asked the ship's employees questions, either about the ship or excursions, they did not know the answer. This was very frustrating. The room was clean but the bed spreads were shabby. The entertainment was lame. One evening they had a performer whose bio compared him to Danny Kaye, Red Skelton, Victor Borge and Charlie Chaplin. Unless you are over 60-yrs-old, the odds of knowing who those people were is quite slim!!! I have truly experienced better singers and dancers at high school talent shows. When we took in the planetarium show one of the projectors was not working so an entire section of the screen was blank.

Ship Quality
The ship is quite pretty and kept very clean.
Dining/Food
The dinner selection was limited and what was provided was very bland. There were a few nights that we had to dine in the Kings Court as the selections in Brittania weren't acceptable. The food in Kings Court compares to that of hotel food... and that is not a compliment. Each morning it was almost impossible to get the coffee cups refreshed.
Stateroom Quality
The room was clean but there were no special details or considerations as found on other ships. Robes and slippers were to have been supplied... we had to ask for the robes. Additionally, we asked for extra blankets and those had to be provided the next day.
Ship Staff Quality
With the exception of our waiter in Brittania, the staff was friendly. I can not say, however, that anyone was exceptional. We found them lacking in knowledge.
Entertainment & Activities
Extremely lame onboard shows. Two of the performers even made comment to how poorly the shows were going. I find the art auctions and shop sales to be silly wastes of time. The lecture series topics were boring. They had the typical bingo, trivia and casino activities.

Bar Harbor, Maine
The weather was extremely foggy which made for difficult viewing during the Arcadia tour (no fault of the ship or the tour guide). Regardless, we enjoyed what we did see and the lobster bake that was included was great. Bar Harbor was charming and we enjoyed the afternoon touring the shops and park areas by the dock.
Boston, Massachusetts
Saw Salem and Marblehead. The tour guide was very good. Luncheon was provided at a Salem restaurant and it was quite good. A full day was spent on the tour and it was very much enjoyed.
Newport, Rhode Island
Had a great time visiting the mansions and really enjoyed the individual mansion tours. The guides on the tour buses were good. Had time between our two scheduled tours to eat and shop.
Don't Miss:
Any and all of the mansions
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Another port without a lot to see/do. We spent the morning exploring on our own. That took less than two hours as there wasn't much to see. Our scheduled tour of Halifax started at 2pm. We walked through a park, had 30 minutes to shop at the same shops we passed in the morning, which was plenty of time as the shopping was extremely limited. Then on to the Citadel where we had a rushed 45 minutes of looking around on our own. The ride back to the ship was a bit strained as the guide was trying to find things to discuss about the city. Outside of the harbor explosion and ties to Titanic, the city doesn't have much of a history or offer any things to do. A lot of discussion was made regarding the high crime... although he did clarify that it was mostly drug crime and that it occurs at night. We encountered a lot of homeless teens and panhandlers.
Saint John, New Brunswick
We took the Alogonquin Hotel tour to St Andrews. It was a good tour being that there really isn't much to see/do in New Brunswick. The tour guide did a great job showing and speaking to the few sites and happenings that were available. We enjoyed another lovely lunch that was included at the Algonquin. Overall, New Brunswick was not an especially good port of call.

We were spoiled!
by Brad from Sherman Oaks, CA
Sailing date:

Pros:
The staff. Service was so good that things were handled before we knew they needed to be handled.
I had often dreamt of a cruise experience, particularly with such a renowned marque as Cunard. My wife and I has such a spectacular experience that we can't wait to go again, and we would be afraid to spend our hard-earned money with ay other line!

Bring a jacket for a beautiful view. Day or night, the Atlantic Ocean made my wife and I giddy as schoolchildren. It was always exciting to see fishing boats in the distance, or the occasional other cruise ship.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Certainly wouldn't mind moving there. Nova Scotia is a place of stunning natural beauty, somehow unfettered by human residence there. You don't have to travel far to see pretty much anything the world has to offer. Water, farming, industry...
Don't Miss:
The Bay of Fundy and its amazing tides.

A day in Halifax. Halifax is a good location to wander through on your own. Peggy's cove is scenic but touristy certainly a visit only once location.
Don't Miss:
Have to see the citadel but only spend a short time, better to see the maritime museum.

Excellent but for some of the onsite staffing. I loved the beach party, but the locals selling goods onsite were rather rude. The water activities staff at the desk were not communicative or helpful. Get friendlier people.

Eleuthera, Bahamas
Beautiful and fun.

It is a one day event. Eleuthera is somewhat limited. It is a beach resort with some limited facilities. Getting in and out of the water is quite difficult with the stones and coral.

An excellent long weekend.
by Bill from New York City
Sailing date:

Pros:
The spa was great, and the library was comprehensive.
My trip was a 4-night roundtrip departing from NYC. It was a short trip, but was an excellent mini-vacation. The crew was courteous and the trip was relaxing without being boring.

The Princess Cays destination in the Bahamas is a nice day at the beach. It was easy to find a decent beach chair in the shade. There was a nice fruit bar in the food area. I had hoped for a nice smoothie or refreshing tropical drinks, but they only had the same strawberry-margarita-chemical-mix from a bar.
Eleuthera, Bahamas
Princess Cays is a nice a day at the beach. It truley was a day at the beach. There was also a cafeteria-style setup for lunch with a wide selection of fruit and grilled food. I had hoped for a fruit smootie or similar, bu they didn't have anything 'refreshing' aside from bar drinks.
